Re: How do I get my BP out of a log?

I mostly agree with the Doc, but I will admit to having an enclosed saguaro "boot" that my snakes just love love LOVE. It's difficult to clean, too, but it's too nifty and well-loved to throw out.

I usually coax them out by carrying them, hide and all, to the kitchen table, where I can keep an eye on them while I work on my laptop or read. Curiosity almost always seems to get the better of them, and they'll usually come out and start exploring after 10 or 15 minutes. But that might not work with a snake that's really deep in shed.

You must also consider the possibility that the snake may become injured (Not from the Hide) or ill and need vet attention. The extra stress of trying to force the animal out while sick or injured isn't worth it. Throw the thing away.

I made the same mistake myself with a bit of chola wood - snake loved it, I grew to loathe it.

Took me two weeks to finally catch him outside of it so I could remove it.

I did something similar to two of my tanks. I was using 2 of those heavy Zilla cave hides. I'm holding the snake in one hand, scooping out poop with the other hand. When I finished, I reached down, picked up the hide one-handed, and proceeded to drop it through the bottom of the tank. About 2 months later, in a moment of haste, history repeated itself. After that, I bought some of the Reptile Basics plastic hides and never looked back. I just put a small piece of the vine wood or one of those small rock water bowls flipped upside down in their enclosures to rub on...
