So you advocate a permit to own horses, any large dog, pigs, cats, and coconut trees? Ask Rhode Island how well the permit system works. They said "We'll issue permits to those that are responsible" and they don't issue any permits.
In an ideal world, people would be responsible for their own actions, and not buy pets they can't keep. People buy large breed dog pups and then realize "gee it's huge and it's biting people" and dump it on a rescue, the local humane, or a hapless family who think it's a 'good dog' for them. So now all large dogs need permits, because of the irresponsible owners.. but we'll blame the person who sold the pup to the people who said "We're ready for a large dog!".
It's not only the seller's that are at fault. It's not the very few attacks that are making regulations and bans appear. It's the focused attacks on reptile ownership by Animal Rights groups as the first step to banning pets.
Permit systems are the first step to full bans, and you only have to look at Florida to see that a permit system didn't do diddley squat to help matters. They issued a permit system and then a year later, it turned to a full ban. How did that permit system help?
I'd love to see any solution that would help. I'm just not hearing a solution.
What were we doing while regulations were being formed? We were writing letters, calling media, calling the representatives, meeting with the politicians, putting out the word for people to act. Our government doesn't listen to the people any more. That's evident all over the country and it's shameful.
