Just a thought...same thing sorta happened to me, but I was the "crazy following guy". They had pulled into a well lit gas station and pretty much said "why the hell are you following us?". I told them their lights were out and drove off before they could thank me.....or flick me off.
~Ha my tail lights were out a couple weeks ago and some guy pulled up next to me to let me know. I replaced the sensor under the brake pedel so Im good there!

EH, I wasnt nervous or afraid. I was just confused. I thought it was odd how that car just stayed with me in the most suspicious way. I wouldnt have called the police unless it really got crazy. Im crafty
