Does the glue gun need to make direct contact with the glass to heat it up first, or can you just melt the glue from above, letting it drip down on the glass, and then just press the probe immediately into the glue? I really like this suggestion. Thanks.

Hot glue guns are pretty easy. You can pick up a mini glue gun from a craft store for about $5. Basically just plug it in. let it heat up, put a glob of glue down on the glass and stick the probe in quickly before it dries.
