Thanks for the quick responses. My only issue with just laying it on the glass not secured is that if the snake moves the probe to a cooler location, which I'd imagine he will, the Herpstat will open up the flood gates so to speak and drive the temperature up to a point where it could potentially burn the snake. I'd feel much more comfortable with securing the probe directly to the glass, as this way I'd know precisely at all times what the snake may be exposed to if he was to burrown down against the glass. This setup is for my 16-year old daughter so I'm trying to make it as fool-proof as possible. She'll be doing all the regular maintenance but I don't want her to have to worry about checking/adjusting the probe on a regular basis. Thanks again for the quick responses.
