Well as someone who works for Petsmart now and has gone through the training process, I can tell you that the employees DO receive basic training on the animals in the store. Of course, it is just basic knowledge and even though there are plenty of opportunities to learn more, even while on the clock, I think many employees don't take that opportunity to learn and just go through their day. It is only a job after all.
One of my managers asked me yesterday how things were going with training with the pet care manager. I could honestly tell her I was having so much fun! I actually didn't want to leave work! I think the problem with uneducated employees is the fact that the managers continue to hire people who have the wrong attitude. When it comes to taking care of and informing people about animals, I think the stores need to be very picky about who they hire. They need to hire people that are very enthusiastic and have knowledge of animals BEFORE they are hired. You can hire anyone with open availability but if you want to provide your customers and their pets with the best possible customer service and provide healthy animals, the stores need to hire better people.
