I didn't purposely not declare them. sometimes they just ask how long you were in country for and where you've been. if they would have asked I would have told them.
i live right on the border as well have my whole life and i have crossed 100's of times and not one time did i cross did i not get asked if i had bought anything that i was bringing back with me. so you must not have told them when they asked.
"So far this is the oldest that I've been"
'If you can make it through the nite, there's a brighter day'
"I'm out the game, put the 2nd string in."
"live with the pain and keep trying or die knowing you never gave anything a chance"
"Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside while still alive"
"No one can take away your dreams"

Just because they asked you each time, doesn't mean the customs in his town border did the same thing. You cannot assume things like that and place the blame on something so unfounded.

Yes, I can walk you through the legal way of doing things. Canadian Wildlife Services, US Fish & Wildlife Import/Export License, Exemption to Designated Port Permit, US Fish & Wildlife Inspection....etc. The whole process to get setup with take a couple months so you should start on it now.
