Re: How Often Do You Handle Your Snakes?
I have two snakes. One in a bin, one in a glass terrarium. I try to handle them both at least twice a week, as I want them to stay calm and used to me.
The only difference in their handling, is if one hasn't pooped yet, I'm less likely to take it out. Though my woma just crapped on my floor the other day, right after crapping in her cage too. Grrrr.

Typically I only keep left over lasagna in Tupperware.
My aminamals live in Sterilite tubs though. Just sayin.

You guys are really getting trolled hard.
"Never argue with an idiot; they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
and
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
Both by Mark Twain. You guys are holding your own, though. However, basic internet advice:
"Don't feed the trolls."
Though it's not as amusing.

Well I guess I shouldn't argue with you......You obviously don't see what the point of this poll is. It was to find out if ones who use habitats tend to pay more attention to their snakes than the ones who use bins...You know out of sight out of mind. If you don't see them you might be more inclined to ignore them.
The concusion so far is that it's about equal.

Here are some terms to google that helps support my point. (terms that I know you are to arrogant to ever consider looking up, thats a jab as well by the way.)
Brain science
R-complex
the Triune brain Model
Paul D Maclean
Forebrain
midbrain
hindbrain
Limbic System
The science of the limbic system is not some "crack pot theory" as your describing it and the fact that you're trying to argue against it is just more and more proof that you should not only not be aloud to have animals, but you shouldn't be aloud to have kids either. You are obviously to innept to care for anything but yourself and I pitty anything that relys on you in any way (theres another jab for you).
As far as my "infiriority complex" goes how can you even imply that such a thing exists in the same breath that you say (to summarize) the limbic system does not exist, being that the limbic system is what would handle the FEELING of infiriority? I believe your direct quote would be "So when you say snakes can't feel because they lack some sort of a 'system' I will take that with a grain of salt." What you're essentially saying in that quote is that you think that snakes have developed some magic section of the brain that controlls feelings with out actually having the section of the brain that DEVELOPES CONTROLLS AND RECOGNISES FEELINGS! Is this another part of your magic limbic ball python morph the one that talks, and tap dances?
Its a good thing that your to innept to take care of your pets! Now I wont feel bad when the scientists find out about this and come take your snake so they can study it.
To end this statement I'll quote WesleyTF because he delivered it so elequintly! "STOP ANTHROPOMORPHIZING YOUR ANIMALS."
theres another word for you to google because I'll garantee you have no idea what it means either.... theres another jab for you.
Edit : I'd also like to take a second and thank WesleyTF for touching on a subject that I really can not argue about with out offending everyone on the board. Thanks welsey for explaining something I didn't want to.
The only one that's dum is someone who thinks science is the end all be all of information. They consistantly make mistakes...They consistantly change their minds. And they will admit that they know very little about the brain. You can catagorize sections but it doesn't mean that there isn't something that they don't know about that causes the same effect....But then aren't you religating the creature to a living mechanical, that is just ruled by body parts and not spirit.

I am the same way ....I will take my BP's out twice a week or so and as soon as they start/find a hiding spot I put them back in their tubs. Now my boas on the other hand once they get out there is no stopping them ...climbing all over they get taken out 3 times a week roughly and that's only because they are a lot more active, I also don't handle them the whole time ill let them go all over the bedroom .......Under my supervision

I see the point of your poll. You got one snake and based on your very limited experience, have formulated a lot of BS ideas about snake behavior and husbandry in general.
I currently have only one 4 drawer rack and a small building full of 4 and 6 foot cages. I check on every snake at least twice every day - as does just about everyone on this forum whether they keep their animals in a rack or a cage.
That doesn't mean I cuddle them or pet them or let them curl up in front of the fireplace with the dog. It means I check their cages for snake crap, change out water dishes and mist as necessary. Everyone here does it, yes, even the ones who keep their animals in tupperware.
Too bad you don't live closer. You could come over and show me how much my cribos, FWCs and pseustes are missing out on being handled and petted and stroked every day. Then after we bandage you up and send you on your way your can park your ass back down on your horse and see if it still feels so high.

Re: How Often Do You Handle Your Snakes?
I hold my snakes when I can some times more sometimes less. Depends on what's going on that week. My spider ball female is only 6 months and she seems to tolerate me. My pastel male is 10 months and he seems to really enjoy being held and getting out and about to see the house. My 14 year old female normal is very happy to come out and say hi. She LOVES my husband David. If I open the tank she will just stay in the cave, but if David opens the door she instantly comes out and goes straight for him much like my pastel does for me. I think each snake is differnt and will have a uniuqe personality. That's what I love about ball pythons. They can be so quirky. I keep all my snakes in glass tanks except for our 14 year old. She is in a 69 inch long 22inch high 20 inch wide custum wood cage we built for her retirment. It has two glass fold down doors in front so we are eye level when we get her out.she is doing great as are all our snakes. I considered tub and rack system but I didn't see the need yet. When I start to breed in the next few years I will go to the rack system for any new arrivals. Having glass tanks makes it easy for me to walk in and do a quick check with out disturbing day time sleepers. But as many people have said.. What every works for that person isthe best bet for the snake.

You are the only person in this thread that has made the claim that science is considered the 'end all be all' of anything. It isn't. It's a continual pursuit of information and in that pursuit there are bound to be setbacks. Failure is just as important a part of scientific discovery as success. That's just how it works. Lots of hypothesis testing to prove or disprove the given explanations for natural phenomenon. There are also beliefs and thoughts regarding the natural world that are unwavering despite clear and empirical evidence that debunk and refute them. Those are often self-proclaimed 'end all be all' sources of information and they are anything but science.

Re: How Often Do You Handle Your Snakes?
I too check on each snake once or twice a day. More if Im expecting eggs. I do not handle the BPs very often at all. Especially the ones that are more nervous. I tend to leave them be. I do howevre handle my boas, retic and borneos a few times a week. They actually get more attention as far as handling and out-time goes. The retics because they simply get mad and hold a grudge if they are ignored. The borneos and boas because they have the potential of becoming large and dangerous if they are never handled and allowed to develop any agression issues. So really it varies depending on how many snakes a person has and what species they are.
Science by the way, has actually proved some things that were thought to be of a purely "spiritual belief" theory. No one will ever know everything and really anything you can prove to me can in some way be proven wrong by someone else. "You" being a generalised term.
