For cresteds I use a heat pack if the temps are under 55 or so. I use a cold pack if temperatures are above about 78. However, that is only if the temperatures are the same in both the location you are shipping from and the one you are shipping to. If it is 75 in my location but will get down to 50 in the location I am shipping to, I do not use a heat pack, because heating the box up over 80 would be far more dangerous than the gecko being a little on the cold side for a few hours prior to delivery. If the temperatures are 75-80 or so where I am, but will be below 70 where the gecko is going, I put in just a few ice cubes in a ziploc bag--enough to keep the gecko cool during the few hours before it cools off and the ice melts. With the ice cubes, I only use them in place of a cold pack if I will be dropping the geckos off (or having them picked up) at the end of the day and I know there are only a few hours left with the temperatures in that range before it cools off--they are a very temporary coolant and should only be used when a cool pack really is not needed, but the temps are just a little on the high side for a crested for a short time.
