sterilite drawer carts vs. storage bins

!! i just realized that the drawer carts would be perfect for my mouse/rat breeding project!!
the only thing i'd have to do to them is drill holes in the front & sides of the drawers for ventilation & water bottle access.
i will keep the feeder mice in the 2 drawer cart & use a 3 drawer cart for breeding...its perfect (and it more space efficient then stacking large storage bins).

It's really not that perfect, and any holes that you drill will give the mice purchase to chew their way out. The drawers themselves are also rather loose at the top, another means of escape.

Sounds like a great idea, that really isn't.

i can attach sticking strap like locks to the drawers to keep the mice from escaping...
i think if the mice have something to chew on like a toy or something, they shouldnt chew on the holes in the drawers...

Ive used this method for a month or two when i was getting the actual rodent rack up. No chew outs and not one escape. Keep them busy and your fine..

Also instead of holes all over, Cut the top out and puting a metal screen for more ventilation. If not enough the ammonia will make your feeders sick and not healthy for feeding reptiles

Unless you significantly modify them with your own screen lids, they can easily escape. There are a lot of squeeze holes you can't see in-between the tubs in the shelf.

Do you mean these? The only problem I have had with them is with rats chewing through them (to small for rats anyway), or mice slipping out the back.

that screen is very easily chewed by rodents once they break it enough to get their teeth in.

You need hardware cloth aka chicken wire thats .25 holes. They cant chew through it. That setup can work as ive used it but your screen wont last.
