Happy Easter ie. Rabbits on Craig's List!

It's Easter time! I don't own a retic or a berm (I just have balls), but for those of you who do -- be sure to be watching Craig's list for the next month or so. You might be able to get a good deal on a rabbit, or even free!

I'm guessing there will be a lot that will be given as gifts for Easter that won't pan out

I know what you mean but to be honest I dislike the idea.

If someone is giving up an pet and wants it to go to a good home I think it would be wise for reptile keepers to let that be the animals final fate.

There is simply too much meat for the anti-reptile organisations in doing otherwise.

Ok you save the cost of a meal for your snake - but you could be helping people gather support for taking your snake away from you and putting it to sleep in the future. Personally I'll spend the money thanks.

Did you see all the negative press and eventual consequences for High end herps around the possibility ( not proven one way or the other that I have heard so really only a rumour ) that he was rescuing dogs and cats from craigslist and feeding them to his snakes?

Do you really think the general populace would feel any different about "cute lil bunny-wunnies" ?

My first though on reading this was that it would be ok if the ad didn't specify something like "good home only" or "these are not snake food".

However, the more I think about it, the more I think the only ads of this sort that should be responded to by snake keepers are those that specify that it is ok to use the animal in question as snake food. Just because the owner didn't think in advance to mention something in the ad is not going to make them react positively to the idea of their pet being fed to a snake.

As Derek said, the rest of the world really does not need any more fuel to think that reptile keepers are weird, sick, evil, etc. They seem to manufacture plenty of bad feelings towards us all by themselves...why would we help them?

it would be better if people didn't just get animals for a holiday or as a spontaneous pet.

People seriously underestimate the amount of care rabbits need. They are actually the same amount of work as a dog, but since people see them as pocket pets they are considered even more disposable.

To me, being fed to a snake is a much better use and fate than rotting in a hutch thats too small being fed guinea pig pellets, or being abused by kids. Rabbits are extremely fragile animals that make great pets for the right people.

But that's just me.

As a person who has a pet rabbit that we're trying to find a home for I really hate seeing posts like this. My Son has a rabbit that he used to keep in his room. We found out he was allergic to it so now we've got it moved to a different part of the house while we try to find a new home for him. I told my wife NOT to put it on Craigs list for this very reason. Heck, I have burms myself and could probably find a use for it, but S'mores is a PET rabbit NOT a FOOD rabbit and I would like to make sure that he goes to a home where people will care for him, not use him for cheap food. Some animals are raised as pets and they should be kept as pets. Some animals are raised as food animals and those are the ones that should be used as feeders.

BTW, if there is anyone in the Twin Cities area looking for a PET rabbit. Please drop me a PM.

Sorry, I was mainly just joking around. Like I said, I don't even own a snake that could eat a rabbit. I didn't realize I was going to open up a can of worms and stir up such a debat. Totally not my intention...

Taking any animal from an owner that is trying to find a good home for a PET is just plain wrong. I don't have any problem with feeding live, or whatever, but taking advantage of that person (and to an extent) animal, doesn't feel right. They are giving you this animal because they can't care for it and they have hopes that you are going to care for the animal and not feed it to your pet as free food.

Honestly, it would be like a Cobra/King Snake owner taking Ball Pythons from us and using them as food.

That being said, if the ad is indifferent or encouraging feeding the animal off, I don't see a problem.

My opinion on this may not have people liking me very much. But, look at it this way. Hundreds of THOUSANDS of people buy their kids cute, tiny little rabbits for easter. For the next few weeks everything is good, but then they grow up. Look on craigslist in a months time, and see how many " Cute little easter" bunnys you will see, with people adding " No longer have the time" " Looking for a new home" or " Kids not interested anymore." Is that fair for the rabbits? Of course not. People should buy a pet to KEEP the pet, and love it and give it care for the rest of its life, not just because it made a cute present at the time not realizing the care they need. I think I heard that Rabbits are in the top three animals dumped at shelters.

When I was a little kid I had a rabbit and now I realize it led a horrible life in a hutch and was never let out. How many of these will live that life? We all know with reptiles, that only a select few owners buy a pet and actually plan to research all of its needs, and then give those needs to the pet.

I know ill be looking on craigslist for bunnys, but that is because Ill need a few breeders once my rabbit condo is finished being built.

I personally would never buy a feeder that was someones pet, but sometimes they are better off in the belly of snake than in the hands of a irrisponsible owner, and their kids. Dont get me wrong though, im not saying every person selling their easter bunny is a irrisponsible owner.

Not only that, but most people will Resell the Rabbit for alot more than the average feeder rabbit is.
