I have a question about F/T actually. Why can't you refreeze them? Or why do people advise against?

They don't do well refrozen. Their innerds decompose and when the rodent is thawed, its pretty disgusting, they basically fall apart. Same thing with frozen tv dinners. Once thawed, no turnin back! I usually feed just enough so that if one or two snakes refuse, I have two "gluttons" that will gobble them right up.

If you have a thawed rodent that isn't eaten, you can keep it in the fridge for a day or two, then re-warm and feed, but its best to be able to plan so that all are eaten when thawed.

Am I the only one thats grossed out by the idea of frozen mice sitting in a bag next to my ground beef for dinner that night? Nobody seems to make that argument. I have no problems handling feeding or working with mice, but that doesnt mean I like the idea of rubbing a frozen one against MY dinner... Just thought I'd throw that in there, cause nobody seems to mention or even care about it.

Maybe I'm just weird... wouldn't be the first time.

Bottom line there is no Live VS FT debate except for those you like to argue

It's up to each and everyone to be knowledgeable about their options, know the pros and cons, be responsible and practice safe feeding

Be responsible and feed what works for YOU and is convenient to YOU.

ok, first off if its really bothering you then please dont feel the need to explain. I am not trying to convince you to feed FT but list why you think that there are any advantages to feeding live vs FT.

ugh...I feel like I have written this a thousand times....again this is my opinion

Pros-
1. it is easier for me...I do plan on getting many more BP's by the end of the year and eventually am planning to breed my own
Nice, I wish you luck. and with your setup it may workout for you. but raising mice does not sound easier then buying frozen in bulk.


2. I like going to the store to pick up feeders each week...it is fun for me to check out their new stuff....play with their tegu for a while...and talk to the owner about what she has seen around
well i personally dont like going to pet stores and lots of people dont have time to do this.
3. I think thawing mice is gross....I really don't want 10-15 soggy mice laying around while I wait for them to get the right temp.
I thaw them on a hot pad in my snake room so they are not soggy. And I think a tub of 50 live mice is gross but to each their own. And thawing for an hour beets having them all the time (breeding them)
4. My 83 yr old Mom lives with us...and though she is hip to the snakes...she has opened the bag by accident grabbed one of the mice and freaked
i have another freezer for mine, or lable them and move them away from food. does she like live mice better?

5. I personally think that live has better nutrients due to not being frozen. And I do not really know when this rodent was frozen. I have to rely on the person I bought it from to tell me that and hope they are being honest.
thats why you buy from a trusted person. do you trust the pet store owner you get live from? alot of petstores dont breed there own.

6. There have been tragedies feeding FT as well as live. The nails of the FT do not have the give that live does...therefore it has been known at times to cause internal injuries.
Im not saying this does not happen but i was not aware of this or heard any problems like this.
7. It takes less time for me overall to do it this way and less messy. Get em...put em in the critter carrier...feed them off....clean out the carrier...done.
ok with a few snakes this may be fine but lets see how clean and neat this is when you have alot more.
8. My personal opinion is it is much more natural for them.

That is all I can think of now.....but I am sure I will think of more. Again...I don't give a poo what anyone else does....I am not here to convince anyone. However with that being said...it gets really really old when some ppl that do feed F/T push it so much.

I dont understand whats the big deal about a snake getting bit by a rodent. Most of the time is not even a big bite or scratch. We as pet owners/keepers are the ones who exagerate and make a big deal out of it.

If snakes could be so easily harmed or killed by a rodent, we wouldn't have any snakes today, because they would have been extinct A LOOOOOOOOG time ago... Their skin has evolve to deal with those kinda injuries and many other things.

I think keeping frozen rats is gross.

I rather feed and keep a live rat/feeder and clean after it than keep dead frozen rats in the freezer and even more gross to watch them defrost.

Rodents are pretty amazing animals too, just watching them is amazing. I rather see a live one and interact with it than seeing a frozen dead one.

It's a personal choice... If you feed F/T is fine, but dont go around pushing it into people. You are what you eat, and what you eat is usualy in the fridge/freezer!

yes, snakes are tough but I still dont want any marks, scratches, bites, etc on my snake if I can avoid it. Lets say I have a lav albino, that would really piss me off if it got chewed up even if it healed. and snakes were not designed to catch rodents in a small plastic box were neither could escape eachother and forced to eat at certain times.

Again not you specifically, but that is really not a reason to push F/T on people seriously.

What? not wanting scratches or bites on my snakes is a selfish reason? ok I used lav albino as a example but I dont know about you but I dont want any marks on ANY of my animals no matter their $ amount. and what do you mean it has nothing to do with the snakes health, in my book thats alot to do with the snakes health.

A snake isn't like an autograph photo or some collectors item. It's an animal. I don't see why so many people treat their ball pythons like they have to be pampered. They are genetic killing machines. If snakes could talk, they'd want live prey not some frozen junk that's been dead for god knows how long
