the data package is DEFINITELY worth it, IF you use your phone enough. i use mine to check bus schedules, google random things "before i forget" (as stuff comes up in conversation), check reviews on products i'm considering buying, etc. i literally use my phone just like a computer.

that being said, i USED to have a blackberry. i HATED it, because navigating websites on a blackberry is absolute HELL and it takes FOREVER! so no, i don't think a data package on a blackberry is worth it. i got rid of my blackberry and switched to an iphone, and a data package on an iphone is ABSOLUTELY essential!

i don't quite understand why the general consensus is that blackberrys are for "business" and iphones are for "play." because personally, i find the iphones much easier to use, faster, and more versatile. AND they do nearly everything a blackberry does. all my emails (from MULTIPLE) accounts show up on my iphone the minute they show up in my inbox. i don't believe with blackberry you can have more than 1 email account forwarded to your phone.

the ONLY thing that blackberries have going for them, is Blackberry Messenger. but most people have unlimited text messaging anyway, so there's really no need for a messaging service anyways.
