Popping!?

So jw how many times did you try to pop before you did it?? lol.. ive tried a couple of times on my normal after watching some videos on it and have not got it lol.. think this is prolly cuzz im afraid of hurting her lol..

do any of you have any tips?

Well if it really is a "her", she doesnt have anything to pop.

If it's a female, then you probably had done it correctly but didn't know.

I like trying it on males so I know I'm doing it right. I can master it now after quite a few tries.

oh dang!!!.. i don't have a male to try it on.. well i don't think i do... i have 2 bps.. my 1st one is a normal from a pet store before i knew everything i know about pet stores lol... and my 2nd is my female pastel..

i took my normal to get checked out by the vet about a month after getting her.. and he probed her and said it was a girl... BUT!.. im starting to think he was wrong.. which is one reason why i started trying to pop her.. the reasons why i think he was wrong are -

1. my normal is really close to the same age as my female pastel.. no more then a couple weeks diff i wouldn't think. At the most a month younger or older... hard to say.. but anyways my female pastel is a good few inches longer then my normal and about 2 times as thick as he/she!... and my female pastels head is like 2 times as big as my normals.. (NOTE: SHE IS NOT UNHEALTHY LOOKING.. I WANT TO MAKE THAT CLEAR! SHE DOES NOT LOOK UNDER WIEGHT AT ALL! SHE/HE IS A GOOD EATER!) btw i know my pastel is a female. I got her from a reptile show in Iowa.. from JD constriction and John (the owner) popped her right in front of me and showed me what to look for.

2. my normals tail is long which if i remember right males tales seem to be longer then females... (correct me if im wrong)

3. i can not for the life of me remember what they are called.. i want to say spurs but im not sure.. they are by the snakes vent.. and normally males have longer ones then females.. well my normal has a lot longer or noticeable spurs or whatever their called then my pastel.

those are all the reasons i can think of.. at the moment.. let me know what u all think

Ok here is what you should do imo. 1. Find a local breeder. 2. Have them show you how to pop your snake. 3. Practice with them to master it. 4. Well there is no 4 but I have OCD.

Don't judge by the spurs, tail length, thichness, anything like that. I have females that would pass as males and males that would pass as females under those "guidelines" The only way to be sure is to probe or pop and doing either of those methods wrong can injure the animal.

This is why you pop on KNOWN males. Not every snake will be willing to pop out easy. As they get older they have control of the area and can hold it in.

Even breeders that are highly regarded can make mistakes when popping snakes and unless you see penes (not to be confused with scent glands), there's no real guarantee that the animal in question is female.. until she produces eggs as an adult.

yep i already knew that lol.. John told me everyone gets sexing wrong at some point.. end of story.. if somebody says they have never been wrong about a sex of a snake they are either lying to you or have not been doing it long enough to make their mistake.. but its only a matter of time until they do....
