Could it be a retained eyecap? If you kept his shed, check to see if the eyecaps came off. If they didn't, bump the humidity up a little bit, or give him a nice warm soak for 10-15 and it should come right off if you rub very gently with a q-tip.
If it's not a retained eyecap, it may still be because of dehydration. Just give him a nice spray down, and it should go right back to normal.
If it's none of that, and the rubbing continues it's usually bad news bears. It could be cause of mites or RI, so a herp vet visit would be in order. Check to see if you hear popping or wheezing, and if there are fluids near the nose or mouth. If it's mites, check for little moving spots anywhere on his body. They're usually no bigger than the period at the end of this scentence.
