    Wink thermostat with rack

hey y'all, i am currently in the process of getting a rack and i was wondering what kind of thermostat i need, i currently have a reptitemp 500r because i only have 2 tubs and it works fine, but i am currently looking to buy from animal plastics, probably their economic line with belly heat, now my question is, do i need a more modernized thermostat, or would the one i have now work?... thanx

    Re: thermostat with rack

It should work fine. Just make sure the heating draw on the racks doesn't exceed the 500 watt rating of the thermostat.

I have read that the on/off type thermostats like the Reptitemp shortens the life of heat tape (commonly used in racks), but I can't confirm that. I use Herpstat ND's (proportional) thermostats on both my BP racks. They constantly monitor and adjust the power to the heat source rather than turning on and off. The ND (Nitedrop) have built in timers to drop them temps if you're temp cycling when breeding.

The proportional thermostats are a bit pricier, but I think they're a good investment in the long run if you're getting into racks.

sorry, dont mean to hi-jack ur thread, but what is the difference between the grounded and un-grounded herpstat??
A room full of empty racks and thermostats that have been unplugged.

Grounded has the third plug post.

    vs. the non-grounded regular posts.

You'll want to match that up to the plugs on your heating elements.

yeah, when i start to keep more than one rack i'll probably upgrade, but for now im just buying a 5 tub rack to keep my bp's, so i'm hoping the reptitemp will be enough

    Re: thermostat with rack

i thought there was more to it but i guess not. all of my UTH's are ungrounded so i guess ill be looking at proportional ungrounded herpstats.

i have two reptitemps and they work great. but eventually i would like to upgrade also

You might be alright with that themostat for a small rack. I do have a suggestion on you racks. I would go with the boaphile plastics rack. They have free shipping and include tubs and heat.
