i've got a 17-85 f/4-5.6 (around $450) for walking around, and then a 50mm f/1.4 (around $350) prime because photoshop bokeh just isn't the same...
I prefer heavy, single purpose glass though - which means long glass should be long, and not attempt general purpose coverage of the wide end of the spectrum.
