has anyone had this happen before

the other day i found my spider with substrate in his mouth i cleaned it out as best as i could then i came home after work to find him with a mouth full of substrate again i cleaned it out again then upon further inspection saw early signs of what looked liked mouth rot i have seen mouth rot before and knew exactly what to do my vet taught me what to do removed as much necrotic tissue treated him with neosporin it's mostly healed but it still puzzles me that the snake would substrate in his mouth i use bed-a-beast and never have had this happen before i would greatly appreciate any feedback on this if anyone has had this problem before

What's Bed-a-beast have in it? What kind of substrate is it?

I'd go onto paper towel or newspaper until you have it figured out.

Also, I've never had that happen, or seen it happen.

compressed coconut husk you soak the brick in water fairly easy to clean and i can compost in my compost pile wich goes in my garden every year makes for some nice loamy soil

Have you noticed your snake rubbing its head on anythign in the enclosure? If it is getting mouthfuls of bedding then something is wrong and it may be rubbing its mouth on the bottom to get some relief. I would test for RI and have the mouth checked for mouth rot again. Definately change the bedding to news paper of paper towles for now.

For any reason would the scent of mice be in there at all? I have heard of a snake found with it's mouth flat on the floor trying to swallow it because there was some "mouse juice" spilled.....

Your coconut fibre may to too wet! I let mine dry out for a couple days before using it!

wet or dry it dosent make a difference I almost had a snake choke to death on it when it was wet and my other one got it stuck in the corner of his mouth and developed a small abcess that I am now treating. I know a lot of people on here like it but I am just using paper towel now, it dosent look pretty in the tank but until i find something i like better i feel its the safest.

I ordered some coconut husk yesterday. How often do you change out your coir? Any tips for using it?
