Avatar Blu-ray
Alright, so I have heard people getting really upset about how Avatar is being released. Let me catch you up on what is going on .. then ask your opinion. For the all I care, you can replace Avatar with Lord of the Rings or The Wiggles, I am curious more about how you feel about the process.
Facts
- The Blu-ray and DVD come out on April 22nd. and will contain the movie and nothing else. No trailers, no special features.
- In November an "Ultimate Edition" will come out with all the cool stuff like commentary and the like. This version is also rumored (I think it is only a rumor) to have 20-40 minutes of additional scenes in it, so it will be the directors cut.
- Next year yet another version will release, but this time in 3D. I assume that this will have all the special features of the Ultimate version.
Rumor
- People are hearing trickles about a re-release to theaters with the additional scenes in it.
Now, knowing all that, here are my questions.
1) What edition would you get?
2) Would you be/are you upset about the way they are handling the release
3) Who cares?
I loved the movie, and I want a copy. My TV is not a 3D TV, and I don't see that changing anytime soon .. so I am not upset about waiting another year for the 3D version. That leaves me with either the version coming out on the 22nd, or the "Ultimate" version.
I am thinking I would just go with the standard no frills thing. I so rarely watch any extras to care about them being there or not.
The whole reason I am making this post is I have seen more than one person on more than one site being completely upset and frustrated over their plans, and I just don't understand why. Maybe I am a corporate tool?
Am I?

Re: Avatar Blu-ray
Hmmmmmmm..... I was completely unaware of this dire drama taking place.
My initial feelings on the matter are "meh....whatever." It just goes to show that no amount of money is ever enough. They haven't raked in enough dough from that movie, so they have plans to goad people into buying multiple copies of the same DVD. Such action doesn't do anything to bolster my nearly non-existent respect for the movie industry....but....it's their business and I don't have any heartburn about them running it however they want. If I felt there was something morally wrong with their action, then I simply wouldn't buy their product.
Will we buy the blu-ray? Probably. We have an extensive library of movies and Avatar is a movie we'll likely want to add to it. But only one copy. I'm actually glad to know ahead of time that the current release won't have any extras...I don't mind waiting a few more months and save my money to keep from being tempted to buy a second copy.
It sure as heck isn't something worth the energy to get upset over. LOL

1. While I would definitely enjoy the ultimate version and watch some of the cool effects from the movie (I never watch these but Avatar is worth it!), I'm not going to wait until the fall to buy that special copy. I'll probably just end up picking up the BluRay.
2. Does it bother me? Yes, it bothers me that (Like Judy said) it's just another way for Hollywood to bring in millions more dollars by hoping people will double buy the movies. However, it's not enough to make me do anything about it (buy what could you even do).

Re: Avatar Blu-ray
Its really no big deal to me either, its just a marketing trick to get people to buy just 1 more copy of the movie, I'll probably get the Ultimate Edition or most likely the 3D version.

Re: Avatar Blu-ray
It's all about $$$$$ sell one version here one there make money either way, some people are impatient and will want it now even if it's only the movie and nothing else, and some people will be patient (like me) and wait for the 3d version to come out.
If people know what they buy when they do I see no problem with it, I will not just buy it until it's the version I want.

Doesn't all big technology companies do this anyway?
I have had a copy of the Golden Globes copy for months now. DVD quality. Shoot me.

The 3D version requires a 3D player and TV to be seen .. correct? That was how I understood it, so those wanting to see it in 3D will have to upgrade their systems too.

Not sure about that but not necessarily I am sure a version in 3D will come out for regular TV where you will need to use glasses like at the theater to see it...............otherwise that would be a bummer if you have to have a 3D TV (can't see upgrading TV for a movie )

the TV thing is a definite. You need a TV with a certain frequency for 3D to work. You will still need glasses though, even if your equipment is right. That isn't an Avatar thing, that is just how 3D works currently

Re: Avatar Blu-ray
Deb and Sam,
Sam is right. In order for the 3D to work, you'll need a tv that runs AT LEAST at 240mhz. The reason being that it is basically "flicking" between 2 different images in order to create the 3D effect. So the tv needs to "refresh" very quickly to do this... On top of that, you'll still need the glasses AND the 3D blu ray player.
HOWEVER, 3D has been around for the consumer for many years now. They've made children's movies in 3D for at least a decade and I'm 99.9% sure those folks didn't have a state of the art 3D tv and 3D blu ray player since they weren't even out yet!!
So it'll be interesting to see if Avatar 3D will NEED the special 3D blu ray player...
