Keeping Humidity Down
Ugh, I'm seriously all out of ideas. During the winter my humidity was perfect, hovering at 45-60% at all times but now that spring's come around the humidity's shot up (the two days of rain probably doesn't help matters either) to 75-80% constantly--or at least that's what my accurite's saying.
Temps as of now are 83 cool side and 92 hot side, ambient tips a little high (probably due to the moisture) at 85-86.
Here's a list of things I tried so far--
Moving their water bowl as far away from the heat source as possible
Airing the their tubs out (works for a little while but goes right back)
Drilling a couple more holes in the side and top (no difference)
Adding more aspen (not much change either)
Covering their water bowl with a top (it's those plastic take-out things) that has a hole cut in. (nada)
Just now I added paper towels to see if it'll suck the moisture up but I'm not holding my breath. Any idea on what I can do?
I'm thinking maybe I should change their aspen bedding entirely (did it last week when everything was fine) because I know they keep humidity pretty well.
>___<;;;; halp?
Watch and wait; a hapless creature has wandered in wake of my growing hunger. My oh my, don't you look tasty? Hey traveler, what do you know of wolves?
All that's scaly and reptilian, all that's furry and mammalian, all that swims in the sea, all that flies in the sky--I love each and every one of these precious creatures.

Re: Keeping Humidity Down
Aspen never did anything for me humidity wise.
Id change the substrate out in one tub to see if it helps, that way your not wasting a bunch on all the tubs if it doesnt work.
Get the ambient temps down, warmer tub, warmer water, more evaporation, more humidity.
Get a fan going in the room to circulate air. Ceiling fans are great.
Ditch the top to the bowl, I've heard horror stories of snakes drowning in bowls with little access holes like that.

Re: Keeping Humidity Down
If there is a way to put a heat bulb in the tub that would help.

Re: Keeping Humidity Down
It's only two tubs so I'll change one and see what happens. Got rid of the water bowl top thing quick--never heard of it happening but better safe than sorry.
I'm not sure how to get the ambient temp down without lowering the temp on the hot side, but I got a ceiling fan and I'm running it right now. Probably because the air is really humid to begin with right now.
I use tubs so I'm not sure how I'd get the ceramic bulb to work in their tubs--couldn't they burn themselves on it?
Oh boy, I just remembered I actually have a de-humidifier. If it's still not down by tomorrow, I'm going to run it for like 15 minutes or something and see what happens.

Re: Keeping Humidity Down
for the ceramic bulb, buy a heat lamp stand, they run at about $20 at petco, that way is far enough to warm up the tub and take humidity, but not close enough to burn the snake or melt the tub

Yes, the snakes could burn themselves on the ceramic heat emitter. I don't know what kind of tubs you have, but if it will be too close, the do make wire guards to put over the lights so they can not touch it.

Re: Keeping Humidity Down
Thanks for all the great advice everyone, but the ceiling fan did the trick. Checked it 3am this morning (because I'm neurotic like that) and it was down to 70, checked it middle of the day and it was down to 61, it's hovering at 57-59 right now.
Oh geez this gave me such a headache but hopefully it should be okay now. =)

Little fan in the room, or if climate problem in general with where you live a small de-humidifier could do the trick?
