I've only been on this forum for a few days and I can already help someone else out
I use an under the tank heating pad along with a 50 watt red bulb overhead in the middle.
I leave both of these on at ALL TIMES, even night time. The under the tank heating pad works as his hot spot, and the overhead reb bulb does a nice job of heating up the ambient air temperature.
I got a very good reading of all this by using the accurite thermometer from walmart. It costs only $12 and it comes with a probe. The unit itself measure humidity and ambient air temp while the probe measures your hot spot.
I use the 10-20 gallon UTH and 50 watt red bulb and i put them on dimmers to control their temperatures. I am at a steady 90-95 degrees for his hotspot and 78-82 degrees for his ambient air temp.
Humidity is always around 60% because I leave a very damp towel covering the right half of my tank.
So in short, YES leave the UTH and red bulb on at all times (as long as they are on dimmers to control them) and your temperatures should all be fine. Just make sure to use the wet towel on top of the tank and mist the tank every morning/afternoon a little bit.![]()
