Are jungle carpet pythons tame pets?
I plan on getting a jcp, but i read that they're very aggressive & they tame down with handling, but how long does it usually take for them to tame down?

With attention a neonate carpet can become very docile but with my experience less handled subadults and adults are a bit nippy. I would try to get a 20 on someone that deals with them daily and definitely try to get a baby.

Re: Are jungle carpet pythons tame pets?
In my opinion none of our herps will every really become "tame". Its more like they get used to us and figure out that we're not food or a threat. As for JCP's being aggressive mine only nipped me once and that was because i handled him the first week i had him. Your supposed to let them settle in but i wanted to check on him check if there were any health problems. But now i have no problem going in his enclosure and grabbing him when i need or want to.
I think JCP's make great pets and beautiful ones at that.

Re: Are jungle carpet pythons tame pets?
the thing i learned about handling young carpets was to just reach in with no hessitation and pick them up, the worst they can do is nip you. its when you open the cage or rack and let them get all defensive or even worse touch then and back off if they flinch.

Like everyone said, handle them when they're young and without hesitation. In time they'll "tame" down. I had one that bit the snot out of me every time I touched it for the first 3 months. Then one day it just stopped and hasn't tagged me since.

I think they make great pets, but I am of course biased by now They are jumpy as babies, but for sure can be very handleable as sub-adults and adults. If you get a small one and work with it, should be very smooth sailing. Every once in awhile there is a pure evil one of any species, but with carpets they are few and far between.

I have a baby JCP, and so far he's a total sweetheart! He actually seems to enjoy being handled, and will go to my hand if I put it near him - then wrap his little tail around my fingers. I kept hearing they were nippy as babies, but Kipling apparently missed that memo... LOL.

Re: Are jungle carpet pythons tame pets?
As babies they can be a little nippy, some can be calm though. When they are little you should start handling them to get them out of their nippy phase, but with time and growing they eventually settle down and become calmer. Some do some don't. They do make awesome pets though.
