    Ovulation without breeding?

Hi I have a 1400g female (fire) that has been housed intermittently whit a male fire and that seems now to be ovulating. I have pay great attention to this couple and nerver saw them breeding, not a single time, but I can't discard the fact that they may have actually breed for a short period of time while they were out of my sight (nights for example). I know that female ball pythons sometimes lays non fertile eggs, but is possible for a female to ovulate without prior breeding? Thanks you all for your time!

    Re: Ovulation without breeding?

I have been pairing my Het Caramel male to my two Het Caramel females since November and havent seen 1 lock, both females have ovulated. Just because you didnt see a lock doesnt mean it didnt happen.
    Cheers!

    Re: Ovulation without breeding?

While ball python locks can be very long, they can happen in only a few hours, so yes, while you were sleeping, there is a chance they could have locked up. There are cases of snakes retaining sperm from previous seasons and even cloning themselves and becoming gravid without ever coming in contact with a male (though this is extremely rare). Though given the history of the female being in with a male for periods of time, I would guess she bred while you were not looking.
    Under Construction.....

If she is ovulating and you had her in with a male, I can almost 100% guarantee that she locked up with him at some point.

I have a pair of Het Axanthics I have yet to see lock, but I am hopeful that they are just shy and do the dirty deed while I am away.

Thanks a lot for your replies! I do not sleep much, so if there was a lock, that was a short one (max 6 hours). I going to keep this thread updated.
