    I would just change the substrate to what you want. It might stress him a little, but changing tanks will probably stress him as well. So the way I see it, you might as well just do all of the major changes at once and then he can settle in after that.

    I wouldn't be surprised if he is too stressed to eat his next meal, but he should eventually calm down as long as all of husbandry is correct.
