Sometimes the lacrimal duct that drains the eye into the mouth can get infected or blocked by a piece of substrate or fur. The lacrimal fluid cannot drain and builds up in the eye, causing it to swell in a somewhat uniform manner.
Affected snakes will often be discomfited by both the pressure and lack of vision and can act extremely agitated - including corkscrewing or other eccentric movements.
Another issue that can cause ocular swelling is blepharitis.
There are many things that can affect the eye and cause it to swell and no one on this Forum can positively diagnose or treat these things - advise your friend to take that snake to the vet.
