Best GTP

What would be a good starter GTP locale? I would like to get one but I am overwhelmed by the diffrent ones there are.

its going to depend on the animal. No locale, morph, color, or anything like that has an effect on personality.

advise I will give you tho, get one that already feeding perfect if your not ready to deal with a picky eater. and buy one thats captive born, less chance for problems.

I had a suspected aru/biak and she was the tamest snake I owned to date, also have a merauke and he is pretty tame also, just not as social as the aru/biak. but their locale had nothing to do with how tame they were, just depends on the snake.

I will have to somewhat disagree with u, I will agree t defiantly depends on the snake but like with dogs some breeds are just better than others which u can also disagree or agree with.

Many people choose Jayapura due to the majority of them being easier to handle say over a Biak.

NOT saying that u can’t have a Biak that’s handable - I have one!
NOT saying a Jayapura is handable just saying over the majority this is what I have found to be true with dealing with GTP.

Nothing person OhhWatALoser but I feel Brandon has more experience than u and I dealing with GTP, he was just giving his opinion on which local he felt was best for your first GTP.

I have a friend that has a pair of Kafiau/Canary Chondro's and they are very tame. I have handled them alot and neither has even attempted to strike at me. He also had a biak cross that was mean and has bitten me several times.

100% untrue. In the 16 years I've been keeping chondros, Sorongs and Jayapuras have had the best temperments of all of them, other than some of my designer bloodlines. Yes it's true that genetics can play a roll in behavior, but until you've owned 20 Biaks, you can't tell me locale has nothing to do with personality.

In my experience, Biaks and Arus are the most defensive of chondros. Sorongs and Jayas, even WC animals have been very calm for me.....same goes for Kaufia/Canaries.

snakes are not dogs for one, but in the same arguement all I've ever known was sweetheart pitbulls and they seem to be the biak of the dog world. again depends on the animal. and locales are not breeds. it would be like saying dogs bred in germany are nicer than dogs beed in the usa.

He might have more experience than me but making a blantly false statement is just wrong. locale is just where a snake is from, their all gtps. they don't have different social cultures or anything so theres no reason they would have different personalities, you can't compare them to dogs, their personalities arn't effected by what part of the world (supposedly) you pulled them out of. it makes no sense to even make such a claim.

so my point is the OP shouldn't be looking at a name that was put on them for marketing purposes and look at things that really matter for a first time owner.

and no im not taking it as a personally attack at all, i just feel you are misinformed and I firmly believe stereotypes like this need to be gone.

What blanket false statement? All I did was offer my opinion based on MY experience. I have worked with chondros since 1993 and began keeping them in 1994. I've had lots of chondros in that time. Many imports and many more CBB. My experience is what it is, not what has been published in this book or that. Most people that keep chondros, or have kept any number of locales would probably say the same thing.

And yes, geographic locality can affect the behavioral personality of an animal. Study the landscape of Biak and you'll understand why Biaks are a bit more aggressive than other locales. It has nothing to do with social culture but has everything to do with habitat and genetics.

As for stereotyping locales, if you know what you are looking at you can usually tell what region the animal comes from. Sure there are overlapping areas, but I can tell a sorong from a jaya from an aru. There is a reason we use the term locality "type".

If you ever get a chance, read Dr. David Wilson's study on chondros in the wild. You will find some surprising data in his research.

You need to do your research.

Reading a book and owning one GTP does NOT make u an expert. It is people like Brandon who shares their years of experiences with people like us to help US learn.
