You will probably need to do something a little different than 6 months on and 6 months off if by "on" you mean housing the male and female together. Since females can retain sperm, they can continue to lay for anywhere from 3-9+ months after being separated from the male. With a first time breeder female I would place her with the male for about 3 months tops and then separate her. Let her completely finish laying, which again can take anywhere from 3-9+ months. Once she is totally finished laying eggs she should have a break of 6-9 months minimum to rest and recover. So you might actually end up housing her with the male for 3 months and then by herself (or with other females) for over a year while she finishes laying and then rests.
