    Possible Food for Rodents

I was at Southern States picking up bedding and saw their dog food. I have been told it is okay to feed dog food as the main food for rodents as long as it has the right ingredients and does not contain the toxic food dyes. These are the ingredients in the dog food I found. Are any of them acceptable as mouse and rat food? This is 40lbs for $15.

    Southern States Complete
    Crude Protein - 21%
    Crude Fat - 10%
    Crude Fiber - 5.5%
    Moisture - 10%

    Ingredients:
Corn Meal, Meat and Bone Meal, Poultry By-Product, Wheat Middlings, Dehulled Soybean Meal, Animal and Vegetable Fat, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Brewers Yeast, Natural Flavors, Potassium Chloride, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Ammonium Hydroxide, Propionic Acid (A Preservative), Acetic Acid, Sodium Bentonite, Calcium Bentonite, Verxite, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K Activity), Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Niacin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Choline Chloride, Biotin, Ferric Oxide (For Coloring).

I would also supplement with fresh foods like oats, pasta, fruits, veggies, corn flakes, bran flakes, occasional seeds/nuts, etc.

    Contact Blue Seal Feeds

    Attn: Ray

    1-800-367-2730

it is a sister company to Kent and I was directed to them by Kent since they cover the East coast.

Tell them you are interested in rodent food for rats.

Now this is valuable information! I have been looking high and low for Kent out here and to know that Blue Seal carries it is awesome. We fed Blue Seal feed for our cows before we started making our own feed. I know that I can get Blue Seal. You should look into Ziegler too. Theyre out near your neck of the woods.

I currently use Zeigler (and hate it)....

I will be showing a pellet comparison between zeigler, kent and mazuri as soon as I get a chance

I have all three here currently.

I would try the hog feed, but now that I can get block cheaper than Mazuri I will probably just use that instead. To tell you the truth I haven't noticed one ounce of difference in using the doggybag dog food over the block anyway.

    Re: Possible Food for Rodents

The pet store that has been having issues getting the mazuri in finally got my order in yesterday. They quoted me $22 for a 50lb bag so I'm going to stick with that as long as they can get it in regularly.
