    Good news and Bad news

Remember the New Year Sausage with the bad RI? After a month on Amikacin I had the culture redone. I got the results from the second culture today.

Good News. The Amikacin was working; the second culture came back with only moderate growths of Pseudomonas and Enterobacter. The first culture showed heavy growths.

Good News. The infection has not become resistant so I can still give the Amikacin.

Bad News. She is still sick and needs another month of injections and warm water soaks.

I will be so happy when she gets well.

Re: Good news and Bad news

If it came back after a month it would seem that it isnt going to work no matter how long you do it.

Can you ask the vet about "combo"-ing the drug with some Ceftazidime?

    2kdime,
I have to call Doc’s office this morning. I will speak to Doc about your recommendation of combo-ing.

The Borneo had the First shot of the second treatment last night along with a good warm soak. She hates the shot but seems to really enjoy the soaking. She is now sleeping on the warm side of the enclosure. She is very alert when I changed the water this morning, she was watching and following my movement with her head.

Sandy, also ask about the possibility of nebulizing another antibiotic as well.

The combo really helps cover an even broader spectrum. The Fortaz is also good because it works on Anaerobic bacteria.

If if didnt kill it first go, I'd change something up.

She is in a four foot RBI enclosure. She is a good size girl hatched in 2007 and weighs about 10 pounds
The ambient temp is 82, the warm belly heat is at 85 degrees. Any higher she doesn’t like and will stay on the cool side. She seems to be alright with the 85 degrees. I am keeping the humidity in the high 70’s right now.
