    Unhappy Eye question

so my female ball python has what I thought was retained eye caps, well acctaully she did have them, but her left eye (when viewed from the top is about 2 times as large as her other one. So I look and I can see what looks like blue around the edges white lines coming from the pupils and the pupil is a dark brown, the entire eye looks dried and shrunk. I cant get a good picture of it. could the eye possiblly be dead? I did use baby oil to try and rejuive the eye and remove the eye caps from the other eye. it worked on the other ones but this one seemed to get no mositure Its very wierd any ideas?

    **Edit**

Finally got a picture of her, please excuse my man boobs

    Re: Eye question

Her eye does not look good...
I have heard that their eyes can dessicate when the snake is dehydrated, I would try to make sure she is getting enough water, and make sure your humidity is at a good range, around 60%...

Other than that, I would reccomend seeing a vet right away, looks like she could really use some professional medical care...

O ya and I would not try to get the cap off that eye until u see a vet, you dont want to damage her eyeball any more that it already is.

Good luck man, I hope everything turns out ok with her.

    Re: Eye question

What is the humidity in her enclosure like? What kind of hygrometer are you using to measure it?

Is she going into shed, or did she just recently shed?

I am a little more concerned with the large amounts of skin showing in between her scales, how much are you feeding her?

Ironically one of the ones from my humidor (cigar box) and its at about 45-50 at 66 with a recent misting.

She shed just before I got her about 2 months go.

Her humidty is low getting new substrate tomorrow

and shes usally eats a large rat, but hasnt eat in about 3-4 weeks. I offer at least once a week.

oh she also had snake mites but those have been delt with appropriately. as well as the cage.

    Re: Eye question

I would up your humidity to around 60% and see if that helps the eyes out. It looks like a combination of stuck shed and low humidity.

Could you get a picture of her other eye for comparison?

    Re: Eye question

Now that K brings it up......What is her length and weight.......she looks from the skin between the snake scales....to be overweight. I know that sounds crazy....but it can happen.

As far as the eye...wow that is really hard to look at. It looks worse than a retained eye cap. By the way...how do you know it is not? I personally would take her to the vet and have them look at it. Maybe there is something that they can give you to help it.

    Re: Eye question

so, I went out today and bought reptibark thats what scales n tails said they use, already my humidty has jumped almost 45%! Oh just before I changed it I looked an it was at 15%, yikes....I know I know im sorry. but its at 57% right now.the tank does have vent in it like big ones should I block those off? and also, should I put some sort of covering around it so only the front is visible? if so what would you suggest putting on it?

any whos, but the female and the male are "walking" and are very active right now, more then I usally see them.

Thanks for all the help guys, ill let you know how her eye starts looking in a week or so.

    Re: Eye question

They are cruising because you changed the substrate.

Is it possible that your female is gravid from being housed with a male?

    Re: Eye question

I would just take her to see a qualified vet and they could check for you as well as address the eye issue
