Found new paper substrate?
I work at an auto parts house and i sold some masking paper the other day. I was wondering why i couldent use this as a tank liner. It is relitivley inexspensive for 18"x several hundred feet. The only thing i can think of is this is masking paper for painting cars and i believe it may be coated. Does anyone have any knowledge comments or ideas?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Found new paper substrate?
It's the equivalent of Kraft paper, though that masking stuff may be lined so the paint doesn't seep through. I'll bet it's the equivalent of Butcher Paper.
It'd work OK, but Kraft without the backing stuff on it is preferred.
I use it.

Re: Found new paper substrate?
I'm pretty sure that paper has a coating. Don't know if would be healthy for the reptiles. I'm not saying it is or isn't. I think craft paper would be less expensive. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me will chime in with useful information.

Re: Found new paper substrate?
I worked in a bodyshop, just from handling it, I don't believe its coated, to me it feels like thin computer paper. I've used a heat gun around it many times and never smelled any sort of outgassing, so I wouldn't see it being harmful at all. I wouldn't be afraid to use it. but newspaper is free or otherwise I might try that.

Re: Found new paper substrate?
I have a roll of this stuff and tried using it for a while but the main problem I ran into is that it was so thin that once it was soiled it would stick to the bottom of the cage and end up just tearing to pieces and making a bigger mess than any other substrate I've ever used.
Trying to scrape dried pee covered paper off of the bottom of the cage every time I needed to clean was not fun.
Seems something slightly more absorbent would prevent that issue.

Re: Found new paper substrate?
I found that putting a couple layers of paper towel under it keeps it from sticking. You can also get this paper at Home Depot or Lowe's in the paint supplies section. I also found a website that sells the big bulk rolls that range from 35-75 lbs. I can only imagine what shipping would be like, but here is the link for anyone who is interested...
They also sell unprinted and recycled newspaper...

Re: Found new paper substrate?
Heres some good ones, I use the Packaging Supplies site for my Kraft Paper since they're cheaper.

Just stop by your local metro/subway/bus stop and gank the "free" newspapers
