    Housing ASF's

So I picked up 1.3 ASF's to try and start breeding for my "picky eaters." I put them in a glass tank as I do not have a rat rack. I put two plastic water bottles in, some aspen shavings, food and a cardboard box. Within two days, they have chewed through both of the water bottles! They chewed through the twist on top AND through the plastic water bottle. Not to mention making the cardboard box completely vanish. I had no idea they chewed like this. I guess I will be using glass bottles...but is there anything else particular I should know about keeping ASF's as opposed to keeping normal rats? (aside from their apparent quick-to-bite attitude)

    Thanks.

It varies, mine didnt bite at all. Some do, some are just nasty. They like to chew alot, dont use water bottles or dishes. I used to give them carrots and oatmeal now and then.

Btw scroll down in the forum index, there is a section of mice, rats and ASFs. You will find lots of ASF info there.

    Re: Housing ASF's

I got a 2:5 set from Mike C. in Jax and added a few more over the last year or so. I have bred for temperament as much as possible. I have very little trouble with chewers or biters. When I take them to shows people or amazed by how calm they are. My wife and I handle the little ones as much as possible and kept those as our breeders and do the same with there young and it seems to help. It seems to help both a live food source and to the few local "pet stores" we sell to who sell them as pets.
