Plug hovabator air flow holes??

The hovabator has quite a few holes around the base and in the lid. Should these be plugged up or is the air flow necessary?

Are you sure you bought a new one and not a dameged returned to the shelf one? Is it possible to get a pic? Its been about 3yrs but i dont remember any holes in the ones i had
