Re: how long do you brumate your corns?

I have alomst always hibernated, usually for about 10 weeks. I have just started warming my adults up now.
I had 2 years of not doing it, and both years I got terrible results with breeding. I do know people who dont hibernate and have great results, but it suits me to do it, and also it saves me a small fortune in money on not feeding them lol.

Re: how long do you brumate your corns?

I have had much better results brumating my Corns. Not only for fertility reasons, but by brumating, everything goes like clock work. I brumate them for min. of 8 weeks, bring them out, after the females shed I place them with the males. after 3 hook ups, I know eggs are coming in a months time. After the females shed the 2nd time, I know it is any day, with 10 to 14 days the avg. I usually can tell the day before they lay as the females will generally push all the moss in the nest box to one side so she has a clean spot to lay her eggs.
After that second shed is when the lay boxes are put into the enclosures and checked twice daily. Once the eggs are layed, they go into their containers and into the incubator...60-70 days later at 82 degrees ...pippies!

for double clutching ( if one is inclined to do so) after the female post sheds I pair with the male again, repeat the process and it always seems the 2nd clutch is layed just as the first clutch is pipping.
BEFORE, I brumated, it was hard to pinpoint what day I could expect things to happpen ect.
This long post is just my opinion though, but it works for me, out of all my eggs last year, I only had 8 slug eggs out of 200 or so eggs. All my double clutch eggs, hatched out 100 % and strong

ALSO, almost forgot, with 75 breeders, the brumation time gives me a much needed break from feeding, cleaning ect. all around the Holidays ...and that keeps Mrs. Old_School from throwing us all out of the house!!

2.5 months wasn't a choice on the survey, but that is what I generally shoot for with corn snake brumation, and it has always given me good results. This year I am experiementing with earlier brumation for most of my corns... mid-October through the end of December, rather than early December through mid-February, as I have always done previously. I am very curious to see if it will make any difference.

I haven't had any locks yet, either, but so far only two girls have shed, and I've only made a couple of attempts each at putting them with males. We will keep trying....

Re: how long do you brumate your corns?

I finally had a pair of corns hook up. This is a female amel stripe het caramel breeding with a golddust het stripe male. I'm mostly hoping to get golddust striped babies out of this breeding, but the ultramel, amel, butter stripes, etc. should also be nice!

Please keep us updated as to whether the earlier brumation makes a positive/negative difference, as I would like to try this next year.

Re: how long do you brumate your corns?

So far I have this one female who is definitely gravid and another pair who bred the other day. I have attempted with several other pairs and found them to not be interested. I will keep trying every few days and see what happens....

Re: how long do you brumate your corns?

Just an update on my early brumation thing I tried... So far, I have had seven pairs of corns breed, and all of them are from my group that brumated early (mid-October to Janurary 1st). One of the girls is in her nest box and should lay eggs any time now. Two others are definitely gravid. So, I can now say that I think the early brumation thing has worked just fine.
