Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
I think banning any of them is a stepping stone to banning all of them. It will set a precedent a bad one. I personally wouldn't care if they made importation a little harder because the majority of import 's are treated poorly and many die in the process. But any ban on interstate travel or outright ban on importation is bad in my opinion. I have had quite a few boa's and large Burmese in the past but I dont keep them anymore. But responsible keepers should be allowed to keep and breed them if they want.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
I'm agreeing with Jason. Any ban on snakes just opens the door to put a ban on other snakes. I don't care if it will boost the BP market, it's a bad thing.
That almost seems a little corrupt to me. Thinking that banning other species will boost another species market.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
People who like giant pythons and boa constrictors won't flock to ball pythons. The things they like about their pets, they won't find in BPs.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
Actually, many people believe that it will hurt the ball python market in a big way.
Because the ban is only on import and interstate transport, it's not the case that people will be giving up their large snakes and replacing them with smaller species. So there certainly won't be a boom in ball python and other smaller species sales as a result of the ban. Also, most large snake owners own large snakes because they like large snakes ... it's not like they're going to wake up and start buying up small snakes just to have "something".
The true initial impact will be in captive breeding of the nine species. The largest producers in the industry will be faced with two choices: One, getting out of the business completely. Or two, selecting a smaller species to breed and sell. Both options will negatively affect the ball python market and the industry as a whole.
The breeders that choose to get out of the business will cause a broad, national reduction in the reptile market. Supply will be reduced, and less people will be buying very popular snakes. Less consumers of animals (due to lower supply and the new laws) will result in less people buying cages, heating elements, water bowls, thermostats, hides, water bowls, rodents, etc. Lowered sales in those goods will result in the manufacturers and distributors that support themselves by producing and selling those products to be forced to raise their prices in order to make up for the lost sales. Those higher prices will make it more difficult for new buyers to get into the market and force others that are already struggling financially to get out. Higher prices of dry goods and feeders will also prevent people from expanding their collections as regularly as they have in the past.
That's the good news.
The bad news is that many breeders working with the nine banned species (if the ban goes through) will start breeding other species ... which means more ball pythons, carpets, geckos, bearded dragons, etc on the market ... more supply means lower prices and greater competition, so people that are investing into designer animals in markets not directly affected by the ban will see their animals devalue even quicker than in the past because of higher supply created by large snake breeders moving into new markets.
This ban is bad for everyone.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
I believe that the ban is a stepping stone to banning ALL of our snakes.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
Don't for one moment get complacent and think "oh well, this ban doesn't affect me because I only keep ball pythons and it's not on the list". It's very short sighted, selfish and doesn't look at the big picture. Be ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the big snake keepers - one day you're going to need them to stand up for your snakes.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
I for one oppose the ban, even though I do not own any of the considered to be banned species. However, they banned Pit Bulls in Dade county Florida for similar bad publicity reasons. To my knowledge they are still the only banned species of dog in that county. We don't really know where this will wind up, but we should back each other just in case. I just moved from NYC. The laws there are terrible now, no Iguanas, ferrets, hedgehogs, venomous reptiles, and NO Pythons of any kind. Let's hope we aren't headed in the same direction for everyone else.

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
im supposed to be taking in a 7 foot boa as a rescue. The owners no longer want it and they cant seem to get anyone else to take it. I personally dont do much work with boas but since the ban that would mean i cant transport it out of state to a new home???

Re: if the snake ban goes thru?
The ban will not boost the ball python market at all. If anything it will affect it negatively. I don't agree with the ban even though I don't own any of the species on the ban. Those who keep the bigger snakes responsibly should not have to suffer because a bunch of idiots were...well...idiotic.
