    i have a prob!!!

wel my female pastel keeps going under the newpaper i have in her cage.. and this wouldn't be a big deal but she gets right on top of the uth.. which is not good.. i do not believe it is hot enough to burn her but what if im wrong?

idk why she is doing this it is 80-85 during the day and 75-80 during the night.. so i wouldn't think its cuz she's cold.. so i thought maybe her hide is too big for her.. so i took news papaer and crumpled it up and put it under her hide.. and tossed some in her cage around her hide.. thinkin if she wasn't feeling secure enough that would solve the prob..

but i was wrong.. because when i got up this morning.. guess where she was yet again.. under the news paper right over the freakin uth...

and ps im afraid to switch to any kind of mulch stuff cuzz i could see her getting under that more easy then the news paper..
    any help wold be great!!!

    thanks!

She probably likes it under the newspaper because it is darker and she feels more secure.

Just makes sure your UTH is properly controlled and then you won't have to worry. A t-stat is best, but a rheostat (dimmer) can work.

We have a lot of animals. Some lay on top of the paper and some like to hide under it. They just feel safer that way.

My pinstripe hides under his paper towels, under his real hide... My others like their hides. I think it's just a personal preference of each snake.

Edit: One thing I would advise to do is maybe put more newspaper above her UTH, that way when she does go under, there's a chance she'll go in between two sheets of paper.

Your concern that newspaper is the only thing keeping your snake from being burned by your uth leads me to believe that you have no control over the temperature of your uth. This is the problem I would be looking into.

When you say your temps are 80 daytime and 75 nighttime where are you taking your readings from? Seems cold to me. I'll bet your girl is trying to get as close to the heat as possible because it's not warm enough for her. She is likely looking for something more like 90 (warm side).

ive been told by people that they wont get cold if the temp is over 70... and i got this thing from walmart that read the temp and the humidity.. but before i got that i had 2 things that just read the temp.. i got those from a pet store.. they are in the middle of the cage.. so the hot side is prolly closer to 90 during the day and 75 to 80 durng the night..

    Re: i have a prob!!!

70 is too cold for your BP. When mine passed a partially digested mouse and prolapsed cause the ambient temps got too cool, I estimate it got down to around 68 in the room. Now I don't let the temps get any lower than around 79-80.

70 is on the lower end for my corns, and my boa has taken it that cool, but not the pythons.

    Re: i have a prob!!!

You really want to have a warm side and a cool side. Warm side 92-93 cool side 82-83 with a humidity level of 60%. You can get an accurite with a probe to read this at wally world or lowes for like $12-. Please be sure that you are controlling your UTH...as I have heard at least a dozen stores say that you do not have to. It is really imperative!!

    Hope that helps you!!

    Re: i have a prob!!!

I hate that on the packaging the UTH's say "Keeps temps around 5 degrees warmer than ambient." That's a crock of poo. My UTH (when tested on an empty tub) ran my "warm side" just south of 125. My room runs at 71 with about 40% natural humidity. No way those things run just "5 deg" over the ambient.
