Tinley Show Feb 13-14 :( Rant!
I am dieing to go to this show. The Pops says I'll think about it. I am in Canada and really wanting to hit a huge expo in USA. You see where I live in Canada it would be a 10 hour drive to get there and my dad has no problem driving that far it's just that he is not the reptile kind of guy. He is basically thinking, I am gonna drive 10 hours there and back, pay money for food and hotel so my son can get a few snakes, lizards and supplies. Why can't he wait until the 28th when theres a expo thats half an hour away.
You see my dad really does not really understand the point of it but I have told him serveral times that you can get snakes lizards etc abit cheaper down there. For example here a male spider ball python is 300 there a male spider is 150. He just does not get the point.
What should I do to make his mind go YES!?

Daniel,
Unless you have CITES paperwork in order, you can NOT transport any reptiles from the States into Canada. It can take months to get CITES paperwork approved, and you'd need to contact a US breeder who does international shipments and pay them to process the paperwork (it's a few hundred USD to do so).

I know about CITIES, I was planning on getting most of my animals from BHB.
I thought if I called him within a week or so and asked him to get me CITIES and order some animals from him he would be able to do it all for the show.

Unfortunately, you need longer than that to get CITIES paperwork. If you wanted to come down for animals, i would have started that process already and starting it now is REALLY pushing it. There is also a fee for CITIES and its not very cheap if i recall.
Also, even when doing things to prepare for a show, to ask for something as complicated as CITIES a -week- before a show that big is pretty unreasonable. We can't get the paperwork done as fast here as canada it seems. Breeders, especially large ones spend WEEKS preparing for a show.

With the new CITIES "MASTER List" they have reduced the amount of time it takes to get the U.S side paperwork, however this requires that the breed be on the "Master List". The other thing is that from my understanding..Someone correct me if I'm wrong but you the buyer have to have Canadian importation paperwork that will have to be applied for and received prior to purchase, that will have to be checked and the animals inspected at the customs office prior to crossing the border..
If the breeder isn't on the master list the permit is like 50.00 per animal plus the cost of a vet's certification for export..the standard permit can take weeks or months to get..
I wish it was just as simple as hopping across the border picking up a hall pass and popping back

Just a clarification - it's CITES, not CITIES.

Yup, unless you already have the proper paperwork, taking them back across the border will be illegal. I also do not believe that animal sales will be the primary focus of this show, this will be a special, one-time benefit exposition to raise funds and awareness of the issues facing the reptile industry on behalf of PIJAC and USARK.
I don't think that CITES paper work takes as long as it used to, but it still takes some time to complete. You might want to start researching it now so that you'll have everything you need ready by the time the next show in Tinley park comes around this up coming October 9th and 10th.

BHB can probably get the CITES paperwork in somewhere around 24 hours. I am pretty sure he is on the master list. It also might not take to long for you to get the importation paperwork. Track down the information for importation of reptiles into Canada on Monday and it is possible that you can get this all done in time for the show. Maybe much quicker.
If your not on the master list CITES takes no less than 60 days, maybe longer. It costs $100 to file the paperwork and you can get a few animals in on it. You must also pay $100 to get an import/export license...

So I am talking 200 dollars here. Whoa. How much animals do you get with CITES? I thought once you had CITES you could use it for good........

The best thing to do would be to contact Brain at BHB directly, ASAP. Since you've picked him out as the guy you want to buy from, the rest of the show is going to be just gazing at eye candy. Let him know now that you want to take a look at some of his animals and you can get the ball rolling
