    P. Breitensteini and p.brongersmai

Forgive my ignorance. I have been looking around on the net for a definitive guide to blood pythons. More specifically the differences between the above two species.

As a youngster do they both look the same and if so what are the ways to tell them apart.

Also with ball pythons there is a rule of thumb regards to breedable size and weight. Does anyone have any info on what size they look for when breeding p.brongersmai

    Regards

    Andy

    thanks for any input

Blood pythons reach sexual maturity anywhere from 18 months to 4 years of age. Breeding size occurs at lengths of 3 - 5'.

The differences between the two are very simple to spot when you know what to look for.

    P. Breitensteinis have a row of scales between their labial and peripheral scales. Brongersmai don't posess this row of scales. Check out the pics on Kara's site(homepage), they are excellent examples.http://www.bloodpythons.com/cms/
EDIT: Didn't see your second post, my bad.

From my understanding of it, age is more important than weight with bloods and short-tails.

Actually it's equal from my readings

Females need to be 3-4 years old and at ~12 pounds or more.

Cant be one or the other, but both.

Males need to be at least 18 months to 2 years old or even more. Even then, if he's tiny at that age, I'd hold off.

Congratulations, I think you're the first to ever give me an actual number on the weight! The answer I've always gotten was 3-4 years at a healthy weight for that particular snake.
