Also, the entire under side of the cage is open. By that I mean it's not sitting on anything. It's sitting on a frame and is open to a chest of drawers underneath. I don't know if that changes anything.

Yes that can cause problems in a room that does not have steady temp. Try using some sort of foam and insulate the bottom to help keep heat rising into the cage.

I would think if the excess heat had no where to go that could become a potential fire hazard
I'm still worried that the UTH wont provide enough heat, as the ones I have now are not. I wish there was some way to test drive this... I'm running the zoomed pads now. Are the ones on the reptile basic site hotter? The wattage on the 36" one is 46, compaired to 24 on the largest zoomed one. I'm not sure how that translates though.

im using a 30-40 gallon zoo med tank heater and a zilla thermostat and my temp in the hide is between 90-94........and im using newspaper as substrate...this is in a tub though not a tank
