Finally got bit by the asf bug

So ive been breeding rats for about a year now. I just picked up a group of asf today= 1 male and 4 females. I guess they are about 2 months old and really nice and handelable surprisingly from what you guys say about these buggers. I was thinking mice but found someone local selling these so I figured would be much better than mice as I didnt really want to go that route..lol

tricks t okeep them happy pt /tp tubes to chew up, take a small piece ofunpainted plywood and some chuncks of 2x3 or larger and make a mini table so they can hide under it.. they will chew one this too so don't be surprised. and offer freshlt cut veggies as treats they are fun t owatch having tug of war on tater peeling and apple chuncks. and good luck gettign hem started breeding.

Asf's are awesome I've been breeding them now for about a year and half. I do not touch them, they are very nervous which makes them bite first ask questions later. Tongs are a must. Get ready they are great breeders.
    Absolutely obsessed with ball pythons!

Yup, I would not trust that they will stay handle able. They are a whole new kinds of evil. However, they are great breeders and parents

Re: Finally got bit by the asf bug

I must have the only nice ASFs out there. They let me pick them up and some even let me pet them for a few secs. The only one that has ever nipped me was a weane that I picket up by the foot (on accident). I've had no problems at all with them - they have been great.

mine always let me touch them and are usually no more then inquesetive when i put my hand in. They tolerate a gentle shove out of the way when i need to be near them.

Weaners generally are ok with bieng held in my opinion but just as a word of caution they change when they protect the babies. Its like the jump at you like a dog in order to get a better bite on you.

not just your average Rat mouse or hamster bite ha!

There awesome and as long as they are kept occupied with things to chew on and maybe even a wheel they should be content little guys.

    Mine love blue berries

Re: Finally got bit by the asf bug

I found they love fresh fruit of any kind we had some apples they ewre to b tossed out since not getting ate and i diced a coupel up and they went nuts it like giving a kid 100 bucks in a candy store they go full tilt.

I gave them a whole apple today and it was funny watching them climb on it and havign a tug of war as they kept dragging it to one side of the cage to the other chewing on it.
