I would not use any damp substrate with ball pythons, it will just end up causing scale rot.

If humidity is your problem, there are other things you can do to raise it without having wet substrate. Covering your screen top with aluminum foil tape or plexiglass and removing any heat lamps will make it jump up considerably.
