    Question on heat Part 2

Ok. I have a 20 gallon long aquarium and a UTH installed on one side of the tank and yesterday I got an Accu Rite Indoor/Outdoor thermometer that also read humidity level. My main question is, is where to place the probe inside the tank to get a proper reading.

My other concern is that before the UTH my BP was trying to get close to the heat lamp, but since I replaced that with a regular daylight bulb and installed the UTH, he hangs out most of the time day and night on his hide which is in the tank on the opposite side of the UTH. Also since I've had the UTH in the tank (about 3 days now) he comes out and keeps getting in his water bowl constantly. I felt the tank end with the UTH and you can feel it is just barely warm, so I don't think I have the rheostat turned up too high as I have it almost on Medium from low.

Any suggestions or theories? Thanks guys!

The probe goes in the tank right on the glass where the UTH is.

This point in the tank should never get hotter than 95*F.

Chances are it is just too hot in that hide for him.

Remember, if you're heating the tank to 90 degrees, it's not going to feel warm to the touch. You're temp is 98.6, so 90 degrees is not going to feel hot, much less really warm. Get a temp gun and check your temps. I bet its over 100 degrees just above the UTH.

    Good Luck!

I put the unit on the cool side(indoor temp reading) and the probe on top of the uth and under the substrate to measure the warm side(outdoor temp reading). I also suggest switching the reostat for a thermostat so it can keep the temps steady. With the rheostat, the top goes up and down all the time! You can get the repitemp 500R for $25! Some on here don't like it because it's cheap but I never had a problem with them!

Ok. I hooked up the accurite thermometer and put the probe down at the bottom by the back corner on the side the UTH is located and as of right now it's only reading 72 degrees, but my BP is still insisting on sitting in his water dish. Any ideas?

    Hi,

Double check it by putting the probe under the substrate inside the hot end hide - the hides can trap heat if your using a UTH.

Also don't get tied to the idea he is only in the waterbowl because of overheating - they can also do it because they are coming up to a shed and want higher humidity or because they think it feels more secure than their hides ( water touching them on all sides kind of thing ).

    Are both hides identical?

Just in case he simply doesn't like the hot end hide.
