I use repti sand because it keeps the humidity real low which is needed, Also it is real absorbent when they go to the bathroom and tends not to smell as bad, The bird seed is good because it is safe to be ingested, But if you use repti sand the risk of impaction is fairly low, Now if you use cheap play sand it is much higher, Because play sand tends to be square almost cube like grains as where the repti sand is rounded. They are very very messy eaters and usually drag their food threw the sand and throw sand in it while digging. Also they don''t need water at all, Just mist their food with clean water. If you put a water bowl in their they will just get sand or seed whichever you use all in it and it will increase their humidity as well.
