used to use newspaper but switched to shredded aspen found newspaper pain in the butt when they spill their water bowl (which i guess is some sort of game we play) it gets stuck to the tub like it was glued. when they made a mess whole tub had to be pulled out and washed now with the aspen its just scoop and add more if needed. big time saver plus i think it looks alot better

My pieds and albinos are on newspapers like all the other and as long as they do not spill their water dish they are ok.

You can also buy un-printed newspaper.

    Re: substrate in racking system

I started with newspaper. It's great, but I got tired of changing paper after they inevitably dumped fresh water. I switched then to shredded aspen. Had a male breeder get some of that stuck up in his vent and after a trip to the vet I got rid of that pointy splintery stuff. Then I tried indented kraft paper from Uline. It's nice, thick paper but again I eventually got tired of changing so much paper. It only soaks up so much before it has to be replaced. Then I tried cypress mulch. The only kind I could find around here was a blend, and I didn't like that it looked like there was potting soil mixed in. Water bowl + soil = mud. No thanks! I finally settled on sani chips from Harlan teklad, and am happy with those. For now. They seem to hold humidity pretty well, and poops/urates are easily scooped out. I change the whole tub once a month.

You can buy 140 sheets of packing paper from lowes for 9 bucks! I use this paper for my breeder females and aspen chips for the rest. But I used to use paper for them all and every pee or poo or water spill it had to be changed. And when you get up there in the number of snakes your keeping changing alot of tubs after one of the mentioned bcomes a PITA!

I use unprinted newspaper. I find that regular printed newspaper smells like HELL when soiled.

I'll try the packing paper at lows for 9$ !!

And you dont have a problem when using paper over aspen for humidity ?

the way i look at it aspen is dry and dusty , so going to paper wont make a difference much ?
