Where do you keep your quarantine snakes

I am going to get another snake sometime. I have my baby in a tank for the moment just waiting for my rack to get here so I can put her in. I was going to just use her old equipment for quarantine but I was wondering if I should build my own small rack for quarantine. Is there a better way of doing it? Could some body post some pics of their quarantine set up?
    Thanks

Re: Where do you keep your quarantine snakes

there is nothing wrong with using your old equipment for housing a quarantined snake as long as it is adequate housing and is in a separate room of your house. the farther and less frequented a room the better.

keep in mind that you should treat the new comer for mites as a precautionary measure so keep the set-up simple in the beginning.

as far as choosing what type of set-up ( bins, rack, or cage ) completely depends on what you like and how many you plan to get at a time.

would you set up a ten slot rack if you only plan to get one snake? probably not. as well you probably wouldn't get ten aquariums for a small room either.
i hope this helps you out.

Re: Where do you keep your quarantine snakes

We have a small boaphile rack for quarantine snakes. They are kept on paper towels so we can easily spot abnormalities -- mites, mucus, diarrhea, etc. We keep our quarantine rack a tad warmer than normal to help new snakes deal with the stress of shipping. We work with the snakes in quarantine at the end of the day, after we have taken care of all the other snakes, and we wear latex gloves when working with them. The only advantage of using a rack vs. a single cage for quarantine is that you can quarantine multiple snakes at once.

Re: Where do you keep your quarantine snakes

If for instance, I get 2 snakes from ddd. I would qt them in separate cages in one room.
Then I get 1 snake from bbb. I would qt it in a separate room.

If one gets sick or has something strange going on. Nothing in that room comes out and qt time starts over again, when the sick one is well. You could separate the one that was sick for instance into another room. But qt needs to start when it gets better and the qt on the healthy one needs to start when the sick one goes out into another room.

I am a super paranoid person. The reason is plan IBD. I lost everything 15 years ago. I have seen other people get lazy and sloppy and end up losing their animals.

You can never be to careful. I would use the cages you have, not a rack. Just my opinion.

Good point about snakes from different sources. You aren't paranoid, you're practicing excellent biosecurity.

One persons' "Paranoid" is another persons' "Educated" you can never be careful enough once you go through a devastating loss. I know enough people it has happened to, to learn from their mistakes. That is the whole point of this forum isn't it?

Re: Where do you keep your quarantine snakes

sadly I don't have the room to place them in a low travel/unused room so my QT snakes goto make do with the corner of my desk in the bedroom. I got one in here now and I can't find my camera to take a befoer pic of him.. I wish had the room to have a 2 car garage type building so I can make it setup to house the rodents and snakes outside thehouse but still connected enough to run plumbing and heat/ac to it without having mom's friends come by and freak out or somethign.
