I love how they mention the toddler that was killed while talking about wild Burmese in Florida. No mention of how it was a pet that killed the girl. This is like blaming the wolves for all the dog related injuries. At the end of the day it boils down to misplaced priorities. Something humans are really really good at. Lets freak out about snakes and not look at the threat compared to crossing the road, Carbon Monoxide poisoning, eating peanut butter, the seasonal flu. I for one try to keep things in perspective. I live in Northern New York State. You would be surprised how many people get worried when I tell them there are venomous snakes native to our state. As soon as I tell them that timber rattlesnakes have been seen in the wild in Lake George (not far from where I live), they freak out. I will never understand how knowledge of an insignificant threat is such a big deal for people. The hand full of snakes that are in the region have been around for years. Most people will never see one or know anyone who has seen one. Yet some people have crippling fear where others merely learn something new.
