Rat pup size
My younger ball python is currently eating large f/t mice from Petsmart. Compared to a large adult frozen mouse from Petsmart how big is a rat pup? Is it worth making the switch or should I stick with mice for now. My older female seems to eat anything you put in front of her but my male is a little more picky.

Rat pup is the same size as adult mice but smaller than breeder mice.
Most pups are around 15-20 grams.

If you go to Rodentpro.com they will show all sizes next to currency. Which helped me a lot in the beginning. As long as you have currency to compare it to =P

Re: Rat pup size
Depends on what you are calling a "rat pup." I have seen this term applied to 20 gram pink rats with a little bit of fuzz, and I have seen it applied to 30 gram furry rats. "Small mice" are generally around 10 grams and "large mice" can be up to 35 grams.
Petsmart sells the frozen rodents in little boxes right? Should say the weight of the product on the box, from which you can figure out if their large mice are similar size to their rat pups.
I would definitely switch if possible. I like to switch the babies to rats as soon as they are accepting FT food and are big enough to take a 20 g fuzzy rat.
Would you breed a wobbler dog even though it had a cool coat?

Re: Rat pup size
IMO rats are the way to go... they are better for your animal and there will be a time when mice will not be large enough to feed your animal and you will have to change them then. It is easier to swap a young animal than an old one

I consider a pup to have all it's fur with it's eyes still closed. When I shop for feeders that's what I look for. Around 30 grams.

30 grams is not a pup thats a wean rat. Sm rats are in the 50-80gram range

I agree, pups vary so much between rodent breeders. Look at the weights. I would switch to rats as soon as you can. There is nothing like having an adult that only wants mice.
