For both use at home, in my freelance computer repair business and in my full time IT job I seem to find that I can remove nearly all spyware/virus infections using malwarebytes and avg. Once in a while I'll toss spybot s&d or hijack this in there for good measure. But thus far malwarebytes has yet to fail me, even in a company with 300 computer illiterates that like to go to websites they shouldn't and get the computers nice and infected.
And of course all 4 mentioned are free, or have fully functional free versions with a few less features than the paid one.
