Re: Calling all computer geeks
The best free adware destroyer thus far would be both Avast and Spybot: Search and Destroy. I'm a graphic designer, my ex was a web designer and built computers, and our households are a mass of super computers and laptop networking. Those two together have stopped any problems we have come across, and should help you in getting rid of any crap you have circulating on your computer.

Re: Calling all computer geeks
spybot search and destroy is a fantastic free anti spyware tool.
spywareblaster is good for spyware prevention.
If you're in the market for new antivirus software, Eset Nod32 is great at providing virus/trojan protection AND spyware protection. In fact, since I got Nod32, I don't think I've ever had spybot S&D find anything and I've certainly not had any spyware problems!

Sometimes "Ask.com Search Assistant" or "Ask.com Search Bar" is installed with other apps. You can check to see if Ask.com is in your installed applications by going into your Control Panel and clicking on "Uninstall Programs" (may vary depending on your version of windows)

Re: Calling all computer geeks
For both use at home, in my freelance computer repair business and in my full time IT job I seem to find that I can remove nearly all spyware/virus infections using malwarebytes and avg. Once in a while I'll toss spybot s&d or hijack this in there for good measure. But thus far malwarebytes has yet to fail me, even in a company with 300 computer illiterates that like to go to websites they shouldn't and get the computers nice and infected.
And of course all 4 mentioned are free, or have fully functional free versions with a few less features than the paid one.

I can't say I've ever seen norton be a good choice. 90% of the time I see it install more spyware than what it removes ::shrug::
