new snake laws fo nc, in paper today

i read the paper today, anyway they were talking about new snake rules, on gators, pythons and hots. saying they had to be in excape proof and bite-proof cages, and hots have to have there names on cages, and all transporting cages. and im like no crap, what serious keeper leaves a big python and hot snake, were it can get out. heck i wonder how many people have alligators, in NC as well, any NC keepers or anybody got any input, i thought this law was rather dumb, considering if your a "smart" keeper you would do that anyway. also was there more of the rule i missed

Rules like this are reasonable. We shouldn't need laws, but at least it sounds like all that these laws do is make dangerous reptile keepers responsible should anything bad happen.

I won't complain too much about "dumb" laws that don't actually change anything except consequences for irresponsible keeping.

Everyone should be doing this anyways and I will complain about dumb laws because thats another foot in the door for more regulations.

This law seems kind of dumb like you said its not like people keep their snakes especially HOTs in open containers that are not safe and secure. I really hope as being a resident in NC that they dont use this as a stepping stone to enact more strict regulations or even bans.

it s a foot indeed. if the keeper is dumb, enough to keep a copperhead or a rattler without a lid on his cage, then the dumby should get bit, i know handling is a must, but to keep this kind of snake w/o a lid is dumb

Re: new snake laws fo nc, in paper today

I thought this was already a law pushed by PIJAC or USARK? Was that SC instead of NC? There was a recently passed law that basically said "Keep the herps in secure cages, and if anything stupid happens, you're responsible".

I got the impression from all the stuff posted on that law that it was a law pushed through so that herp keepers could point and say "See, we already have legislation, we don't need more regulation".

It's been a long day, or I'd go hunting for the postings.

This law was passed over the summer... basically it states that you have to keep big pythons, hot and other dangerous animals in locking cages, have the species labeled on the enclosure, have an in case of escape plan posted near the enclosure, etc. I dont have a problem with it because I do this anyways... at least its not like FL where you have to have a permit to keep them and get them microchipped and this and that...

Yeah i live in Charlotte and all my snakes ARE NOT getting out of their enclousures, they are all secured and i think this law just makes it harder for stupid people to get away with being stupid. This law does tell me that its just going to get worse, but at least its not a ban or anything.

I was waiting for this to take effect. The local new said anyone who handles these reptiles in an unsafe manner could be charged with a misdemeaner. I could go on but its not worth my time........
